Đỗ Thiên Anh Tuấn trước đây là giảng viên Khoa Kinh tế thuộc Trường Đại học Nông Lâm TP.HCM. Ông có bằng Thạc sĩ Chính sách công hạng ưu của Trường Fulbright, bằng Cử nhân Tài chính – Ngân hàng hạng ưu cùng danh hiệu Thủ khoa điểm Luận văn của Trường Đại học Ngân hàng TP.HCM. Ông đã tham gia khóa Đào tạo Cao cấp của Đại học Harvard và có chứng chỉ Chính sách Thuế và Quản lý do Trường Harvard Kennedy cấp. Lĩnh vực nghiên cứu hiện nay của ông là chính sách kinh tế vĩ mô, hệ thống tài chính và tài chính nhà nước.

Ngoài hoạt động giảng dạy và nghiên cứu tại Trường Fulbright, ông Tuấn còn thường xuyên tham gia thảo luận trên các diễn đàn kinh tế và cộng tác với các đài truyền hình, các tờ báo về các chủ đề kinh tế vĩ mô, chính sách phát triển kinh tế, cải cách ngân sách, đầu tư công, phát triển tài chính và hệ thống ngân hàng Việt Nam.
